Before going to Wat Pho, we had brunch first at The Sixth. I learned about The Sixth from Nerd Nomads when I was searching for good Bangkok restaurants to try. Other online reviews and even Trip Advisor gave it high praises so I made sure to include it in this year’s trip. Luckily, it’s within the compound of the Grand Palace so it provides a perfect stop from temple visits.
Since I read that it can get crowded and it’s not a big restaurant, we made it out first stop because we arrived in the area a little before 10. The Sixth opens at 10:30 so we walked around the area for a good half hour. Finally, it was 10:30 and we were the first customers of the day!
The menu at The Sixth was also available in English and had pictures, indicating which was the best seller or not. Meals are good for one person but the sizes are generous.
We ordered green curry and (I think) Thai chicken basil. I was able to finish my rice with plenty of meat left.

The food is really delicious! I like spicy food but it has to be embedded or absorbed by the whole dish rather than an add on (hot sauce or chili powder is a pass for me). The Sixth perfectly got the kind of spicy I’m looking for and albeit it’s higher on scale from what I’m normally used to, their Thai iced tea was the perfect partner to neutralize the taste.
I enjoyed my order a lot but the green curry really hit the nail on the head. Until now I still find myself craving for it. The soup was a little watery and thinner yet the taste is so rich. You can taste the coconut and then there’s the spicy kick towards the end. I would highly recommend getting the green curry.
No meal is complete without dessert and it’s not a Thai meal unless you get their quintessential dessert — sticky mango rice.
The picture probably doesn’t give it much justice but the mango is really sweet and the sticky rice is done well. If I didn’t finish my rice I probably would have been able to finish this one. Good sticky mango rice highly depends on the mangoes and I’m so glad that we got a really sweet mango.
I highly recommend The Sixth for people who are going around the Grand Palace compound. The store can be a little hard to miss because it’s really tiny but it’s right by the entrance of the Wat Pho. There is a Thai souvenir shop in the corner before the restaurant. The place is airconditioned which is perfect after visiting temples. The food has the authentic Thai taste but at the same time it’s not an assault to your taste buds if you’re not accustomed to spicy dishes. The price ranges from about THB 180-300, which is pretty reasonable given the touristy location of the restaurant.
If there’s only one thing I don’t like about the restaurant is that it’s hard to locate. I don’t think I’ll be heading back here again anytime soon because I’ve already been to the temples around the area and going here isn’t really easily accessible via the BTS. The green curry is definitely worth going back for, no other restaurant was able to get that same taste.
